The 10 steps
-
Step 1: Check your parts
Flatten the box on the floor and lay the desktop on it face down. Set the frame parts out around it and tip the three hardware bags into a bowl.
Watch out: Never lay the desktop on bare tiles or concrete: one grain of grit under it scratches the laminate.
Tip: Lay each left part next to its right twin so you can see the pairs.
-
Step 2: Fit the feet to the left foot bar
Screw a leveling foot all the way into each end of the left foot bar by hand, then set the bar down on its feet.
Watch out: Screw the feet fully in for now. A foot left half out can snap off when you flip the desk.
-
Step 3: Fit the feet to the right foot bar
Do the same with the right foot bar: both leveling feet screwed fully in by hand, then set it down on its feet.
Watch out: Both bars go the same way up, threaded column holes on top. An upside-down bar leaves the column nothing to bolt to.
-
Step 4: Bolt the columns onto the foot bars
Stand each column on the middle of its foot bar and fix it with 4 bolts and washers, turning them with the Allen key.
Watch out: Hand-tighten only for now. Fully tightened bolts stop the frame squaring up when the crossbeam goes in.
-
Step 5: Bolt the top crossbars onto the columns
Set a top crossbar on each column with its screw holes facing up and bolt it on with 4 bolts. Hand-tight again.
Watch out: The pre-drilled holes face up toward the desktop. Upside down, the desktop screws have nothing to bite into.
-
Step 6: Bolt in the crossbeam
Hold the crossbeam between the crossbars, just behind the columns, and bolt each end on from the outside with 2 bolts and washers.
Watch out: Check the crossbeam sits flush with the tops of the crossbars before you snug the bolts, or the desktop will rock.
Tip: A helper holding the two legs upright makes this a two-minute job.
-
Step 7: Screw the frame to the desktop
With a helper, lower the desktop onto the frame, face up, with the same overhang at both ends. From underneath, drive 4 wood screws up through each crossbar into the desktop.
Watch out: Use only the 16 mm wood screws here. A longer screw comes out through the top of the desk.
Tip: Pencil-mark the crossbar holes on the underside first and start every screw by hand, so none of them wanders.
-
Step 8: Fit the cable tray
Hold the cable tray against the underside of the desktop at the back, centered between the legs, and fix it with 4 wood screws.
Watch out: Stop turning as soon as the screw head touches. An over-tightened screw strips the chipboard and the tray sags.
-
Step 9: Tighten every frame bolt
Go round all 20 frame bolts and tighten each one firmly with the long arm of the Allen key.
Watch out: Firm, not brutal. Leaning your full weight on the key strips the threads in the steel.
Tip: Work diagonally across the frame, like the wheel nuts on a car, so it pulls in evenly.
-
Step 10: Move the desk into place and level it
With a helper, lift the desk by the frame and carry it to where it lives. Press down on each corner and turn the leveling foot under any corner that rocks until all four touch the floor.
Watch out: Two people, and lift it: never drag the desk or pivot it on two legs. That bends the frame and can snap a foot.
Tip: Check with a spirit level, or a level app on your phone, front to back and side to side.
